# Kayit: On-device Voice to Text — Privacy Policy Last updated: August 23, 2026 Kayit is built so your interviews are processed and stored only on your own device. This policy explains, in plain language, exactly what that means for your data. > **The short version:** The Kayit app does not collect, transmit, sell or share > your personal data. Your audio recordings, transcripts, quotes and notes are > processed and stored entirely on your device. We have no servers that receive > your content and no account system. The only information we ever receive is > what you choose to type into a form on this website (see section 6). ## 1. Who this policy covers This Privacy Policy describes how the Kayit applications ("Kayit", "the app", "we", "us") handle information. It applies to the Kayit app for macOS, the Kayit app for iPhone, and this website, https://kayit.press. Both are native apps that run on your own device: - **Mac:** macOS 26 (Tahoe) or later, on a Mac with Apple chip (M1 or later). - **iPhone:** iOS 26 or later. Where this policy says "your device" it means whichever of those you are using. Where the two behave differently, it says so. ## 2. Information the app collects **None.** Kayit does not collect personal information. Specifically: - There is **no account**, sign-up or login. We never ask for your name, email or any identifier to use the app. - Your **audio files, transcripts, quotes, speaker labels, summaries and notes stay on your device.** Kayit never uploads them to us or to anyone else. - Kayit contains **no analytics, no advertising, no tracking and no third-party telemetry SDKs.** We do not track you across apps or websites. - We do not build user profiles and we have no ability to see what you transcribe. This is reflected in the app's privacy details on the App Store, where Kayit is listed under **"Data Not Collected."** ## 3. Information stored on your device Everything Kayit creates or uses is stored locally on your device, under your control: - **Your media and transcripts.** Audio you import and the `.transcript.json`, Markdown and summary files Kayit generates are saved in your Kayit library. **On a Mac** that library is a folder *you* choose (Kayit suggests `~/Kayit`, deliberately outside `~/Documents`, which macOS can sync to iCloud). **On an iPhone** it is the app's own storage, which you can reach in the Files app under *On My iPhone ▸ Kayit*; there is no folder to choose and the app cannot be pointed anywhere else. - **App preferences.** Settings such as your library folder, export location and interface options are stored in the standard system preferences store (UserDefaults) on your device. This required-reason API is declared in the app's privacy manifest and is used only to save your preferences within the app. - **Machine-learning models.** The speech-recognition and speaker-separation models are downloaded once (see below) and cached locally. - **Your saved voice samples.** If you use My Voice, the short samples you save are kept on that device only. **They are not synced between your Mac and your iPhone**, and the app says so where you manage them. Kayit runs inside the operating system's **app sandbox**. On a Mac it reaches only the folders you explicitly grant it, using security-scoped bookmarks, and does not roam your file system. On an iPhone it can reach only its own storage. **What you send is yours to decide.** Kayit can export a transcript, a quote, an audio clip or a whole interview, and it can hand one to the system Share menu. Doing any of that is your own action, and it takes the file outside Kayit. Kayit warns you when your library folder sits in iCloud, Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive or a network volume, but it cannot know where a file goes once you have sent it, and it cannot see what another app does with a copy. The guarantee this policy makes is about what **Kayit** does with your content, not about where you choose to put it. ## 4. Network connections Kayit transcribes offline. It makes network requests in these situations, and no others: - **One-time model download.** The first time you transcribe (and the first time you use certain optional on-device AI features), Kayit downloads its machine-learning models over an encrypted HTTPS connection. These are normally delivered by **Apple**, as Background Assets packs served from Apple's own content delivery network alongside the app. If a pack cannot be obtained, Kayit falls back to downloading the identical model files from **Hugging Face** (a model-hosting service), and it asks Hugging Face which model builds are available when you change engines or models in Settings. Either way the transfer carries model data *to* your device. After the download, transcription runs offline. - **System model downloads made by the operating system.** If you choose Apple's built-in transcription engine, or use the on-device translation feature, macOS or iOS installs the language pack for the language you picked. These downloads are made by the operating system, from Apple, not by Kayit. - **Subscription checks.** If you subscribe to Kayit Pro, Kayit asks the App Store whether that subscription is current. Nothing in the free tier makes this request. This is a request between your device and **Apple**; we neither make nor receive it, and it tells us nothing about you or what you transcribe. **Your audio and transcripts are never part of any of these requests.** No interview content is uploaded in any of them. When your device fetches a model, that request is subject to the privacy practices of whoever serves it: Apple, or Hugging Face on the fallback path (for example, standard server logs such as IP address, inherent to any download). We do not send either of them any information about you, and Kayit itself does not add identifiers to the request. > **Optional on-device AI.** Kayit's summary and entity features run locally > using downloaded models. Your transcript text is processed on your device and > is **not** sent to any cloud AI service. Generative summaries can be turned off > entirely in Settings. These features are on the Mac app only. ## 5. Syncing, backups & your responsibility Because your files live on your device, where they end up is partly your choice and partly your device's settings. Two things are worth knowing. **Syncing folders (Mac).** If you place your Kayit library inside a folder that syncs to a cloud service (iCloud Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive and similar), those services will sync your audio and transcripts under *their* terms and privacy policies, not ours. Kayit detects common syncing locations and warns you, but the final choice is yours. To keep interviews fully local, store them outside of syncing folders. **Device backups (both, and it is on by default on iPhone).** Kayit does not exclude your library from your device's own backups, because for most people an interview recording is irreplaceable and losing it to a wiped phone would be worse. That means: - On an **iPhone**, your Kayit library is inside the app's storage, which **iCloud Backup includes by default** if you have it switched on. Your recordings and transcripts are then held in your own Apple account's backup, under Apple's terms, not ours. You can turn this off for Kayit alone in *Settings ▸ [your name] ▸ iCloud ▸ Backup*, or switch iCloud Backup off entirely. Doing so means a lost or reset phone loses those interviews unless you have copied them off yourself. - On a **Mac**, your library is covered by whatever backup you run, such as Time Machine, on the same terms as the rest of your files. The downloaded machine-learning models *are* excluded from backup, since they can simply be fetched again. **This is not Kayit sending your content anywhere.** It is your own device backing itself up to your own account. We still never receive it. ## 6. This website This website is a static informational site. It does not set advertising or tracking cookies, and it carries no analytics or tracking scripts. One form here does send information to us: the [support contact form](https://kayit.press/support). When you submit it, we receive and store what you entered (your name, email address and message) along with your IP address, your browser's user-agent string and the time you submitted it. We use those records only to reply to you. We do not sell them, share them for advertising, or add you to a marketing list. You can ask us to delete your submission at any time through our [support page](https://kayit.press/support). Before Kayit was released we also ran an early-access request form on this site. It has been removed. Submissions made through it (a name, email address and the field you work in, with the same IP address, user-agent and timestamp) are still held on the same terms, and can be deleted on request in the same way. The form is protected by **Cloudflare Turnstile**, an anti-bot check. Turnstile loads from Cloudflare and receives your IP address and a challenge token in order to confirm you are not a bot; the contents of the form are not part of that check. This site is hosted on Cloudflare, which keeps standard server logs and stores form submissions on our behalf. The site also loads web fonts from Google Fonts, which may receive your IP address as part of serving those font files. None of this involves the app: your recordings, transcripts and notes are never part of a form submission, and Kayit never sends them anywhere. ## 7. Children's privacy Kayit is a professional tool intended for general audiences and is not directed at children. Because we collect no personal information from anyone, we collect none from children. ## 8. Your rights Privacy laws such as the GDPR (EU/UK) and CCPA/CPRA (California) give you rights over personal data a company holds about you. The app holds none of yours on any server: your recordings, transcripts, quotes and notes are only ever on your own device, already in your hands to view, move or delete at any time. The one thing we do hold is whatever you chose to send us through a form on this website, as described in section 6. You can ask us to access, correct, export or delete that record and we will. Data security Your content never leaves your device through Kayit, which removes the entire category of risk that comes with uploading interviews to a cloud service. The security of the files themselves rests on the operating system, the app sandbox, and your own device security, which we recommend you enable: **on a Mac**, FileVault disk encryption and a strong account password; **on an iPhone**, a passcode, which is what switches on the system's own file encryption. ## 10. Changes to this policy If we change how Kayit handles information, we will update this page and revise the "Last updated" date above.
